SUMMARY:Oceanfront Concert Series
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, June 5 | 7 p.m.17th Street Park \nFREE and open to the public \n\n\n\n\n\n \nGet ready for hot summer nights with the Oceanfront Concert Series at Virginia Beach\, a free music extravaganza taking place in the parks along the iconic Virginia Beach Boardwalk. This series brings fans together to revel in the magic of live music against the backdrop of the Atlantic oceanfront. \nSpanning a diverse range of musical genres\, the Oceanfront Concert Series caters to various tastes\, offering an eclectic lineup that resonates with music enthusiasts of all ages.  \nJune 5 \nPARMALEE\nwith Jack Wharff & The Tobacco Flatts\n \nParmalee \nKnown for their distinct family harmony\, irresistible melodies\, and sure-fire radio favorites\, Parmalee has not-so-quietly become one of the genre’s most undeniable contemporary country hitmakers. With three consecutive #1 singles in as many years\, they have more chart-toppers than any other group in country music. The group – comprised of brothers Matt Thomas (guitar/lead vocals) and Scott Thomas (drums)\, \nalong with their cousin Barry Knox (bass) and life-long friend Josh McSwain (guitar) – has accumulated more than 1 billion on-demand streams and four total No. 1 country radio singles. \nMost recently\, they topped the charts with “Girl In Mine\,” which was named Billboard \nMagazine’s 8th Most Played Country Song of 2023. That song was the follow-up to Billboard’s Most Played Country Song of 2022\, “Take My Name.” The band landed a multi-platinum smash in 2020 with “Just The Way\,” a collaboration with Blanco Brown. In September 2023\, Parmalee released For You 2\, an 18-song deluxe version of their 2021 album For You. \nThe band attributes their longevity to a decade spent playing together with no measurable success\, just the love of playing music for fans. They learned who each other truly was\, so they knew who they were standing beside when their dreams became reality in Nashville. The same is true when they go into the recording studio. The men trust their gut when choosing songs and are confident what will connect with their fan base. With determination as strong as it was when they first started playing together and 18 songs ready to release to the world\, Parmalee is poised to take the next steps in their sky-rocketing career. They have no regrets. “We just love to play\,” Josh said. “We love to tour. We love the live connection. Our dream was just to play music for a living. Anything more than that is a bonus.” \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO!:Allowed:• Beach Blanket\, towel\, or beach chair (without a foot rest or canopy)• Small Cooler• Outside Food and Drink (no alcohol)• Re-entry with Hand Stamp• Strollers \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nProhibited:• Alcohol• Open containers of any kind• Glass containers• Bicycles• Pets (except certified service animals)• Professional Camera/Video Equipment• Umbrellas

SUMMARY:Contraband
DESCRIPTION:June 14 – July 19| Thursday\, Friday\, Saturday\, and Wednesday at 8pm and 9pm \nLocation: 13 Street Legends Walk Stage \nFREE and open to the public \nOn May 23\, 1861\, Virginia voters ratified its secession ordinance\, officially putting it at war with the United States.  That night\, three enslaved men rowed across the Chesapeake Bay and asked for sanctuary within the walls of Fort Monroe.  The events that followed were the sparks that lit the flame of Emancipation of enslaved people across the divided country.  Contraband is a half-hour musical that tells the riveting story of those brave men and Benjamin Butler\, the lawyer/General who improvised a legal strategy that pulled the thread that unraveled slavery.  As a sequel to 1619: When Destinies Collide\, Contraband continues the remarkable story of the sacred ground of “Freedom’s Fortress”\, that\, as President Barack Obama put it\, “marks the beginning and the end of slavery in our nation”. \nFor more information about the Virginia Legends Walk Foundation and to nominate an iconic Virginian to the Virginia Legends Walk\, visit https://va-legends.net/

SUMMARY:1619
DESCRIPTION:June 27 – July 20| Friday\, Saturday\, Sunday\, and Wednesday at 8:30pm and 9:30pm \nLocation: 26th Street Stage \nFREE and open to the public \nIn the early dawn of August 20\, 1619\, a wounded ship limped through the mist\ninto the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. Its mission was dark and shrouded in\npolitical espionage. It was an English ship flying under a Dutch flag and carrying a\nletter of marque from the Protestant Dutch Prince Maurice – a license to legally\npirate Spanish or Portuguese ships. The pirate was English Captain John Collin\nJope and the ship was The White Lion.\nAs The White Lion’s hull cut silently through the morning water\, they passed\,\nunceremoniously\, by Cape Henry\, the site where Christopher Newport had led his\nVirginia Company crew ashore for the “First Landing”. And now\, just 12 years\nlater\, another “First Landing” was about to take place; one marked with pain and\ntriumph. And one that would forever change the face of this still-infant nation.\n1619 tells the compelling story of the native Africans who first set foot on\nAmerican soil. It is a story of lives and cultures interrupted – and destinies grafted\ntogether. Told through riveting live performance and a powerful musical score\,\n1619 is a story that 400 years later can finally be told. \nFor more information about the Virginia Legends Walk Foundation and to nominate an iconic Virginian to the Virginia Legends Walk\, visit https://va-legends.net/

SUMMARY:Oceanfront Concert Series: Burning Spear with Kabaka Pyramid
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, June 19 | 7 p.m. \n17th Street ParkFREE and open to the public \n\n\n\n\n\n \nGet ready for hot summer nights with the Oceanfront Concert Series at Virginia Beach\, a free music extravaganza taking place in the parks along the iconic Virginia Beach Boardwalk. \nJune 19 \nBURNING SPEAR\nwith Kabaka Pyramid\n \nBurning Spear’s impact on reggae music is profound. A true legend\, Spear’s legacy through his music is one of self-reliance and self-determination for the African diaspora. With a career spanning over six decades\, his message remains on point and his vocal delivery is as powerful as it is identifiable. \nWinston Rodney began his music career in the late 1960s\, attributing his start to a fateful encounter with Bob Marley. Both were living in the St. Ann’s parish of Jamaica. As Spear recalls\, “Bob was going to his farm. The man was moving with a donkey and some buckets and a fork\, and cutlass and plants. We just reason man-to-man and I say wherein I would like to get involved in the music business. And Bob say\, ‘All right\, just check Studio One.” It was there that Spear recorded his first two classic albums\, Burning Spear and Rocking Time. \nThroughout the 1970s and 1980s\, Burning Spear rocked the reggae world\, releasing acclaimed albums such as Social Living\, Hail H.I.M. and Resistance. His music evolved to incorporate elements of jazz\, funk\, and rock\, while maintaining its solid roots reggae foundation. \nBurning Spear has won two Grammy Awards for Best Reggae Album.  In addition to his music career\, Burning Spear is a dedicated anti-racism activist and philanthropist. He has been involved in various social and political causes throughout his career\, including the fight against apartheid in South Africa\, the struggle for independence in Zimbabwe and his campaign to raise awareness of the teachings of Marcus Garvey. \nKabaka Pyramid \n \nKabaka Pyramid is a Grammy Award Winning conscious revolutionary lyricist with a signature musical style; blending the power\, energy and melody of Reggae with the lyricism of Hip hop. \nA key pillar of the Reggae Revival movement\, Kabaka Pyramid carved his way into the Jamaican reggae scene with Rebel Music in 2011 with marquee songs like “Free From Chains” and “Warrior” featuring Protoje. His hip hop roots were evident in the lyrical style and hard-hitting beats\, laying the foundation for an ever-ascending career highlighted by the classic marquee sophomore album The Kalling produced by role model Damian “Jr Gong” Marley. \nThis chart-topping artist has developed a solid global fan-base that connects deeply with the messages in his music\, touring extensively over the past 10 years at the largest of Reggae stages around the world and headlining numerous 20+ multi-city club tours. Kabaka is well known for delivering an electrifying and entertaining live performance. \nAfter touring with Damian Marley in the US in 2017\, Kabaka would team up with the son of Bob Marley for his debut album Kontraband\, debuting number 3 in the reggae Billboard chart and number one in several countries on iTunes. Hit song “Reggae Music” became Kabaka’s first song to pass 10 million views on YouTube. \nLive performances for Rolling Stones\, BBC radio 1xtra at Maida Vale and Tuff Gong Studios\, winning the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association’s Breakthrough artist of the year and being featured on Chase and Status and Rudimental’s albums are some of the highlights of a stellar career. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO!:Allowed:• Beach Blanket\, towel\, or beach chair (without a foot rest or canopy)• Small Cooler• Outside Food and Drink (no alcohol)• Re-entry with Hand Stamp• Strollers \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nProhibited:• Alcohol• Open containers of any kind• Glass containers• Bicycles• Pets (except certified service animals)• Professional Camera/Video Equipment• Umbrellas

DESCRIPTION:June 27 – July 20| Thursday\, Friday\, and Saturday at 8pm and 9pm \nLocation: 13 Street Legends Walk Stage \nFREE and open to the public \nOn May 23\, 1861\, Virginia voters ratified its secession ordinance\, officially putting it at war with the United States.

DESCRIPTION:June 27 – July 20| Thursday\, Friday\, and Saturday at 8:30pm and 9:30pm \nLocation: 26th Street Stage \nFREE and open to the public \nIn the early dawn of August 20\, 1619\, a wounded ship limped through the mist\ninto the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay.
