SUMMARY:Wreck of the Dictator
DESCRIPTION:July 5 – August 27 | Tuesday through Sunday at 8pm and 9pm \nLocation: 25th Street at Atlantic Avenue \nFREE and open to the public \nOn March 3rd \, 1891\, A Norwegian sailing ship grounded itself during a nor-easter\noff the Virginia Beach coast. For an entire day\, the men of the Lifesaving Service\ntried desperately to save the passengers aboard that ship\, including the Captain’s\nwife and 3-year-old son. The harrowing events of that day etched themselves in\nthe memory of Hampton Roads and precipitated the creation of the Statue of the\nNorwegian Lady at 25th Street. The Wreck of the Dictator tells the breathtaking\ntrue story of the rescue mission of a ship that was slowly being beaten to pieces\nless than 300 yards from the shore while a crowd of shocked bystanders looked\non. \nFor more information about the Virginia Legends Walk Foundation and to nominate an iconic Virginian to the Virginia Legends Walk\, visit https://va-legends.net/

SUMMARY:1619
DESCRIPTION:August 4 – August 27| Friday through Sunday at 7:00pm \nLocation: 26th Street at Atlantic Avenue \nFREE and open to the public \nIn the early dawn of August 20\, 1619\, a wounded ship limped through the mist\ninto the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. Its mission was dark and shrouded in\npolitical espionage. It was an English ship flying under a Dutch flag and carrying a\nletter of marque from the Protestant Dutch Prince Maurice – a license to legally\npirate Spanish or Portuguese ships. The pirate was English Captain John Collin\nJope and the ship was The White Lion.\nAs The White Lion’s hull cut silently through the morning water\, they passed\,\nunceremoniously\, by Cape Henry\, the site where Christopher Newport had led his\nVirginia Company crew ashore for the “First Landing”. And now\, just 12 years\nlater\, another “First Landing” was about to take place; one marked with pain and\ntriumph. And one that would forever change the face of this still-infant nation.\n1619 tells the compelling story of the native Africans who first set foot on\nAmerican soil. It is a story of lives and cultures interrupted – and destinies grafted\ntogether. Told through riveting live performance and a powerful musical score\,\n1619 is a story that 400 years later can finally be told. \nFor more information about the Virginia Legends Walk Foundation and to nominate an iconic Virginian to the Virginia Legends Walk\, visit https://va-legends.net/

SUMMARY:Contraband
DESCRIPTION:August 4 – August 27| Friday through Sunday at 8pm and 9pm \nLocation: 13 Street at Atlantic Avenue \nFREE and open to the public \nOn May 23\, 1861\, Virginia voters ratified its secession ordinance\, officially putting it at war with the United States.  That night\, three enslaved men rowed across the Chesapeake Bay and asked for sanctuary within the walls of Fort Monroe.  The events that followed were the sparks that lit the flame of Emancipation of enslaved people across the divided country.  Contraband is a half-hour musical that tells the riveting story of those brave men and Benjamin Butler\, the lawyer/General who improvised a legal strategy that pulled the thread that unraveled slavery.  As a sequel to 1619: When Destinies Collide\, Contraband continues the remarkable story of the sacred ground of “Freedom’s Fortress”\, that\, as President Barack Obama put it\, “marks the beginning and the end of slavery in our nation”.

\nFor more information about the Virginia Legends Walk Foundation and to nominate an iconic Virginian to the Virginia Legends Walk\, visit https://va-legends.net/
