Saturday, July 10 – Chalk the Walk (On the boardwalk from 16th-18th Streets)
Chalk the Walk takes over the Virginia Beach Boardwalk from 10:00am-5:00pm on Saturday, July 10, 2021, as artists and “wanna-be artists” gather to turn the boardwalk into an impromptu canvas of color!
The theme for this year’s Chalk the Walk is The Power of the Wind.
Let your creative mind flow free as you contemplate all the ways wind moves us: trees blowing, kites flying, pinwheels, flags flying, surfing, walking or running into the wind, windmills, wind turbines, birds flying, wind chimes, clouds moving, and many other images!
By 2026, there will very likely be nearly 180 wind turbines out in the Atlantic Ocean, each about 800 feet above the surface and collectively generating over 2600 megawatts of electricity. The developer, Dominion Energy, indicates it should be enough to power more than 650,000 homes. Because two pilot turbines are already operating 27 miles off the Virginia Beach coast, this is the first offshore wind project in federal waters. Once all the wind towers are in place, probably by 2026, Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads will become a hub for the celebration, study and appreciation of non-carbon-based energy generation, the power of wind, and a green environment.
All participants must register by 12:30pm to qualify for the competition. All drawings must be completed by 3:30pm to be eligible for prizes. Registration is free, and all participants should bring their own chalk.
At Chalk the Walk, participants draw four by four-foot chalk drawings for three blocks along the boardwalk.
Competitors will complete chalk drawings to be evaluated by a panel of judges. Judges will score the drawings according to criteria such as composition, use of color, adherence to theme, and creativity. There will be three competitive divisions: Amateur, Professional, and Youth. The Youth division will be for ages 12-16.
Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded for each division. Winners will be announced at 4:45pm on the boardwalk at 17th Street.
We will be registering participants on site from 10:00am-12:30pm. Capacity is limited.
There is no fee to participate, but it is recommended that artists bring their own chalk.
