PARK PERFORMANCE AT 17TH AND 24TH STREET PARKS

24th Street Park: Pinocchio

Tidewater Winds performs a free family concert on May 22 at 1:30 pm at the Oceanfront on 24th Street Stage in Virginia Beach!

“This is a thrilling family production with our Tidewater Winds musicians on stage performing with narrator Kathryn Barrett, while Rainbow Puppets provides the theatrical puppet interpretation,” said Maestro John Brewington, Music Director at Tidewater Winds.

Pinocchio learns that growing up isn’t easy and he faces challenges, choices, and obstacles that can change his life. From a puppet to areal boy he discovers his journey leads him home and ultimately to value that which he misses, family.

Tidewater Winds launches this performance as a sneak preview to a larger project in partnership with community sponsors the City of Virginia Beach and local Production Company, IMG. Pinocchio learns that growing up isn’t easy and he faces challenges, choices, and obstacles that can change his life. From a puppet to areal boy he discovers his journey leads him home and ultimately to value that which he misses, family.

“Pinocchio” is the first launch of a bigger project titled the “R.i.M.E. Project” (Reading in Music Education). The program was conceptualized before the pandemic but came to life because of the pandemic. Maestro John Brewington acknowledged the decline in student learning throughout Covid, but also grew concerned about student isolation, social interaction and community experiences. He knew coming back to normality meant reaffirming the social connection that the arts provide, as well as the strong mental health benefits for our children. RIME will debut in 2023 as an in-school literacy learning component in the Virginia Beach Public School classrooms for grades K through 5. Tidewater Winds plans to launch new themes annually to continue learning and social growth while planning to spread the program to all Hampton Roads School Districts.

The concert will begin on May 22 at 1:30 pm and will last just over an hour. Musicians will be seated on stage with Maestro Brewington conducting. A narrator will recite the story on stage as puppets interact with each other and the audience. This heart-warming tale ignites thoughts of making good choices, consequences, family importance, truth and lies, and forgiveness.
